Important New Features on the Social Security Website Make Understanding and Applying for Disability Benefits Easier

May 11, 2012

The Social Security Administration (SSA) website has 2 great new features:

  1. The new electronic signature process for Form SSA-827 (Authorization to Disclose Information to Social Security) means that if you are filing online for Social Security disability benefits, you now have the option to electronically sign and submit your medical release form (Form SSA-827). When you file for disability benefits online, you will be prompted to “click and sign” the SSA-827 as part of your application process. Once signed, the form is transmitted directly to Social Security's systems. This eliminates the need to print, sign, and mail or deliver a paper copy to a oficina local del Seguro Social.
  2. Social Security statements are now available online. This means you can have secure and convenient access to your Social Security earnings and benefit information on the Social Security website. The online statements can give you estimates of the benefits you will get for retirement or if you become disabled, and also provide estimates of survivors benefits. The online statement also provides a convenient way to determine whether your earnings are accurately posted to your Social Security records.
